The future payment infrastructure in Denmark

From April 2027, payments in Denmark will undergo comprehensive modernisation. A new payment infrastructure will be implemented with the aim of increasing efficiency, security and functionality in the payments market. The new infrastructure will enable more information to be sent with each payment – supporting improved reconciliation processes for payment recipients – and European standard formats.

Some of the key changes include:

  •  Beneficiary name will be mandatory for all payment types
  • New character limit will apply to long messages to beneficiaries
  • Short messages to beneficiaries will be discontinued
  • Extended Remittance Information (ERI) will be made available

What's changing and how can my company prepare?

As a business, it is important to stay informed about the upcoming changes, so that relevant systems are prepared for the new requirements. You should also review internal payment processes and assess how best to take advantage of the improvements offered by the new payment infrastructure.
  • Beneficiary’s name will be mandatory

Going forward, it will be mandatory to include the beneficiary name in all payment types. When the changes take effect, payments without a beneficiary name will not be processed, so it is a good idea to prepare now.

To prepare for this change, we recommend that you ensure that you check the beneficiary names in your systems, correspond with those listed on the invoices you receive, and that you always use the name listed on the invoice when making an online payment.

Additionally, we recommend that you update your systems to ensure that invoices you send show the correct beneficiary name and address.

  • Message to beneficiary

The message to beneficiary field will be limited to 140 characters, so if your message exceeds this limit, only the first 140 characters will be delivered to the beneficiary. For reconciliation, the first 20 characters will be shown on account statements.

To prepare, make sure that your messages are within the 140-character limit.

  • Text on beneficiary's account statement

The field “Text on beneficiary’s account statement” will no longer exist for most online payments, only the long message to beneficiary field (up to 140 characters) will be available in the new payment infrastructure.

To prepare, make sure that your teams are aware that they should use the long message to beneficiary field in future.

  • Extended Remittance Information (ERI)

In the new payment infrastructure, Extended Remittance Information (ERI) will be available.

ERI allows up to 999 invoices in a single payment file, each with its own reference and amount, which helps to simplify reconciliation and ensure accuracy by validating that the sum of all invoices (including credit notes) equals the total payment amount. This intended to reduce the number of errors and support straight-through processing.

This means that your business can net multiple invoices, including credit invoices, in one payment, and provide all relevant reference information to the beneficiary.

If the beneficiary’s bank does not support ERI, payments will be rejected with the message "Creditor bank does not accept Extended Remittance Information". In such case, adjustments, such as splitting invoices and using either a single structured or unstructured reference for each invoice, will be needed to execute the payment.

    What to do to prepare:

    • Confirm with your system provider that ERI functionality is supported, including the ability to handle structured and unstructured references, multiple invoices and validation of totals
    • Update your payment processes to include references and remittance details in the correct formats (OCR, RF, CINV or CREN) based on the payment type
    • Check with your beneficiaries whether their banks support ERI to avoid payment rejection
    • Be prepared to handle rejections by splitting invoices and adapting references when ERI is not supported by the receiving bank
